IF YOU AIM FOR NOTHING – THAT’S WHAT YOU’LL HIT

I am surprised how many people roll up at the beginning of each day, coffee in hand and start to think about what they will do that day, or worse, not think about it at all and just start aimlessly working away.

These are the people who constantly check their emails throughout the day waiting for a magic placement to appear. They are busy being busy and have poor results because instead of being on the front foot creating success, they are letting their day run them.

It’s easy to get sidetracked, particularly now as there are so many things competing for our time. So, here’s a few ways to get on the front foot for those of you are sufficiently disciplined and motivated.

5 TIPS TO HELP YOU TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR DAY

1 – CREATING CLARITY AROUND YOUR GOALS AND THEIR ACTIONS 

STEP 1

Create a 3 month plan with clear goals. (no more than 3)

Remember SMART when setting goals.

SMART

Someone else should be able to view your goals and tell you if you have hit them or not. i.e they cannot be subjective. Be crystal clear on what they are.

A Simple Example

GOAL – OK, Let’s just take one. Bill $100K in revenue from 6 new clients in 3months.

STEP 2

Break your goal down into monthly milestones

For Example:

Month 1

  • Map 200 potential new clients and their decision makers (side note as the business owner don’t do this yourself – outsource it)
  • Prepare and plan the delivery for a high-value piece of content

Month 2

  • Deliver a high-value content piece to your target contacts

Month 3

  • Follow up high-value content piece and establish who is hiring
  • Pitch each client for their roles
  • Take on 6 new roles

STEP 3

Fill in the weekly actions that must happen for you to reach your monthly milestones.

For Example,

Let’s just take the Month 1  Milestone – Connect with 200 potential new contacts –

  • WEEK 1 – Create a list of 200 potential new contacts
  • WEEK 2 – Create one value piece for your market. This could be an informative interview on a topic they are interested in, a podcast, webinar – anything of value to them.
  • WEEK 3 – Create marketing collateral to promote your content to your target clients.
  • WEEK 4 –  Have your content set up and ready to send to be delivered effectively.

Then complete weekly actions for month 2 & 3 milestones.

In month 1, all you need to worry about is month 1. Break your month up into 4 weeks and put the actions in your diary.

BOOM –  at the end of 3 months, you have your extra $100K in revenue.

2 – URGENT/NON-URGENT

People who are most successful spend almost 70% of their time in non-urgent but important activity. Stop replacing things that you know are important for the long-term growth of the business with short-term tasks that are squeaking at you for attention.

3 – CONSISTENCY OF THE RIGHT ACTIVITY

Once you know what you need to be doing to reach your goals, plan them into every week. Don’t go this way one week and another the next. Give your strategies time to work and give yourself the space to learn new things.

4 – SHARPEN YOUR SAW

Invest in your development so you get better and faster at achieving results. There is so much available now online. Don’t just look at recruitment blogs/training. Look outside our industry to thought leaders such as Jay Abrahams, Seth Godin, Simon Sinek etc. They will give you inspiration for new and better ways to achieve more.

5 – START AS YOU MEAN TO GO ON

Have you ever had a client or potential client say to you “If you do this job for me at a reduced rate, I’ll use you again next time?” Of course you have; we all have. Don’t fall into the “I need money now” trap as these clients NEVER make you money. Spend your time on finding clients who have values clearly aligning with yours.

A final note… Don’t let this be a cause of more overwhelm for you – just pick one thing you like from the above and get it in action to help you get control of your day.
