Be Someone’s Ruby

I’ve been co-hosting The Tech Savvy Recruiter for a couple of years now and I love it because I learn something new every time Andrew and I interview a guest.

And sometimes it’s also having current beliefs reaffirmed.

Here’s a few things that landed for me in this latest episode with Pranav Badami, the co-founder of Stardex ATS.

#1 Be someone’s Ruby

Andrew (my co-host) moved house recently.

He needed to refinance.

He called one person: Ruby, his broker from two years back. He didn’t shop around or go near a bank.

And AI didn’t get a look in, because Ruby had built so much trust with Andrew, he didn’t hesitate to call her when he needed a broker.

The recruiters winning in this next chapter aren’t the ones with the flashiest stack. They’re the ones a candidate calls first because the relationship is solid.

AI can’t touch that.

#2 Recruiting might be one of the most AI-proof jobs out there

Now there’s a change for the books!

We’ve been constantly told for the past 2 or 3 years “Watch out, your jobs are under threat.”

Sure it’s shifting and there’s winners and losers. But the sentiment is changing and Pranav and others at the cutting edge of AI are now saying the opposite… that we’re safer than we think.

Because whichever way you slice it, the important part of recruiting, the people side is proving to be more resistant to AI than the AI pundits originally predicted.

Because judgment isn’t in the training data. It’s in things like the hesitation on a call or knowing when someone’s answer doesn’t quite match their face and AI can’t be taught that.

Maybe one day – but not now.

#3 Are you a mechanic, or do you need to get somewhere?

Pranav’s line. So many founders are burning hours building their own tools, tweaking prompts, chasing the next shiny workflow.

But ask yourself is your destination the workshop, or is it placing people? There’s a balance between building and buying AI and it pays to weigh it up first.

Some of this I’m sure you’ve heard already, but it’s good to hear it a few times as we all wonder what’s next!

I loved this chat with Pranav, and I think you will too.

Behind The Name

Belinda Kerr

From meat pies to mung beans… I grew up on a cattle property in a hippy village. A little diverse perhaps. I remember the hippies coming en masse to Nimbin when I was young and our sleepy little farming village transforming overnight – we were famous! National media attention put us on the map… and in the guidebooks attracting travellers from Montreal to Munich.

I was exposed to every view, ideal and judgement of the day and found it fascinating how different we all are. The variety sparked a lifelong interest in what makes people tick (myself included). I guess it’s no accident, (although it totally was) that I landed in recruitment. I now live in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, another diverse and beautiful part of the world, with my family, two scraggy dogs, and a vibrant community of great friends. Funny how life can take you full circle.

All I need is a Kombi to complete the picture.
