Often I see posts from founders talking about their transition from broke to having it all.
What I don’t see very often is…
Founders posting about how they’re overwhelmed, burnt out, stressed and just don’t know what to do next to stop going sideways, or worse backwards.
Yet I speak to these people every day. They put on a brave public face, but behind that they’re questioning everything.
This is what I call “The Messy Middle”.
The place great recruiters land as they learn how to become great business owners.
I was at the hairdressers this week (Why do they make you sit in front of those HUGE mirrors!) and I took a quick snap… one that would normally never see the light of day!
But today you get to see it because it makes a point. ????
My hair is neither “passable”, like it was or “a new cool do” which is what I was going for.
It’s in “The Messy Middle”, that place where transition happens.

Anything growing and changing has a messy middle.
– A construction site morphing into a beautiful home.
– An athlete training for a marathon.
– A caterpillar turning into a butterfly.
Here’s what’s fascinating about the butterfly.
The caterpillar doesn’t just gently level up.
Inside the chrysalis, it completely dissolves.
It rebuilds.
And the struggle of the emerging butterfly is what gives the butterfly its strength.
If you make it easier to emerge, the butterfly doesn’t survive.
If you’re in “The Messy Middle” right now, that’s not a sign you’re failing.
It’s a sign to keep adapting and changing to build something even better.
How long you choose to stay there is up to you.
If you’re feeling like you’re ready for the good times but can’t quite reach them, here’s how to transition faster.
- Decide what it is you passionately want to create in your business
- Identify your biggest constraint right now
- Fix that (One major constraint at a time)
- Then move onto the next
- Get help where you need it
And when things feel heavy, remind yourself of this:
There is a way through, even if you haven’t figured it out yet.
You’re not the first person to feel this way and you won’t be the last.
Thousands have walked this path before you, and left clues.
You’ve heard it before: “If nothing changes, nothing changes.”
So, seek out change.
Because there’s an even better business waiting for you on the other side of “The Messy Middle”.
