9 ways to beat distractions at work

Ever notice how one distraction at work can eat up 15 minutes of your day? 

Before you know it, you’re reactive instead of purposeful, and your brain feels like it’s juggling too many tabs at once.

Here are 9 ways I’ve trained myself and my team to stay focused and get things done without losing our minds.

1. Work in blocks

Pick a task, dive in, then reward yourself with coffee, a quick walk, a stretch, or whatever works. 

I’ve found 60-90 minute blocks hit the sweet spot. Set a timer and commit.

2. Wear headphones (even if silent!)

Just wearing them makes people think you’re busy. 

Bonus points for a little head wobble. 

It really deters interruptions and helps you ignore things you don’t need to notice.

3. Switch off notifications

Social media pings, emails, Slack messages – they steal focus. 

Turn them off. 

And those subscription emails? Schedule a time to clear them instead of letting them pile up.

4. Schedule your week

Fill your calendar to about 80 percent. 

Leave a little wiggle room but have your priorities laid out. Big stuff first like client calls and weekly meetings. 

Then smaller tasks like social media posts. Finally, quick wins like calling Jenny about that interview.

5. Tackle the hardest jobs first

Do the tasks that require the most brainpower when you’re at your sharpest. 

I also knock off the least fun tasks early. The rest of the day feels lighter after that.

6. Dodge unnecessary chit chat

People-pleasers, this one’s for you. It’s okay to say “I’m heads down right now.” 

Everyone secretly appreciates honesty and nobody gets offended.

7. Ask yourself “Is this the best use of my time?”

Seriously. Keep this front of mind. 

It prevents rabbit holes, wasted minutes, and those “wait, what was I doing?” moments.

8. One thing at a time

Got a new idea while working on something else? Jot it in a “vault” to tackle later. 

Otherwise, you’ll have ten half-finished projects and a huge overwhelm headache.

9. Stop checking your phone constantly

We’ve all seen the train and café photos. 

Constant phone-checking trains your brain to lose focus faster. Check when you need to, but don’t let it hijack your attention.

Productivity isn’t about perfection. 

It’s about spotting distractions, protecting your time, and setting up small systems that help you actually focus. Try these tips, tweak them for your style, and see what works.
