For the past 4 years, every time we’ve had heavy rain, water has busted over my gutters like a waterfall.
And when you live in the sub-tropics, that’s often!
Tons of precious water just washing away.
When you rely on tank water, this just isn’t 😢 funny.
I’ve had roofers, plumbers, even my sister look at it! (Entertaining:))
Nothing worked:
– Larger drains.
– Outlet valves.
– Foam in the roof.
Everyone kept trying to fix the problem where it was showing up.
Until last week.
🦄 I found my unicorn plumber.
He traced the entire system back to the tank to 100% identify the cause before trying to fix anything.
Turns out the root cause was…well… roots!
They had completely invaded the down pipe.
So, 4 years and thousands of dollars later, all it took was one person who made sure he was fixing the right problem, before he got to work.
Today, when it pelted down again? Not a drop lost.
And honestly, I’ve done the exact same thing in my business.
Spotted a problem. Made a quick assumption and thrown time and money at what I thought was wrong.
Might be familiar?
Like when I’ve thought I needed more leads, but actually it’s been more a follow up issue. (I like to blame ADHD for that one).
Or times when I felt I needed to hire someone, when in fact I just needed better systems.
We all do it.
Here’s what I’ve trained myself to do instead.
→ Trace problems “upstream”, instead of trying to fix them where they show up.
→ Test my assumptions about the cause.
→ Stop fixing symptoms until I’m 100% sure I know the reason.
I know when you’re under pressure it’s so tempting to just dive in and fix it fast so you can keep motoring.
But if I’ve learned anything, it’s to resist the urge…
Your future self (and bank account) will thank you.
