Social media is often talked about.
I’m noticing at the moment though there’s a real focus in the conversation on how it’s transitioning into its next chapter and what that means.
I’m hearing a lot of people talking about the importance of connection and community within social media (well that’s to be applauded) ???? as opposed to the vanity metrics.
Apparently, there’s a lot of people creating viral posts, but not making much money.
But there’s also a lot of people with small networks doing social media in a very intimate way… making a lot of money.
I came across this recent post by Steven Bartlett the host of the podcast Diary of a CEO and I like the way that he’s articulated the new chapter of social media.
I found his walk through the timeline of social media really interesting and insightful.
Definitely worth a peek.
For those of you with short attention spans and busy days here’s the bottom line for you.
Where is social media heading to next? The below is an excerpt from his post.

So my 2025 strategy is simple: Long, Live, IRL and Owned.
✅ LONG: Share real life. Depth > polish. 2x more time in the comments connecting.
✅ LIVE: Go live more often (Twitter Spaces, LinkedIn Live, IG Live, Twitch, YouTube Live).
✅ IRL: Meet people (events, coffee chats, run clubs etc).
✅ OWNED: Build your email list (ConvertKit, Substack). Create private digital spaces (Discord, Circle, Slack etc).
This is the time to stop broadcasting and to start connecting!

This resonates with me.
With the increase of AI generated content people are going to be looking for depth over volume.
Live makes sense, we can tell you are real (for now anyway).
Nothing has ever trumped IRL.
And as the platforms wield more power, it’s important to not build your house on rented land and keep your network where you can communicate with them at will; not when the algorithm says you can.
We can spend so much time and wasted effort on flim flam content that adds no value – all in the pursuit of a few likes.
For what?
I for one will be so happy to see the back of increasingly empty content (especially on LinkedIn) and see more that adds value to my day. Content that isn’t just designed to needlessly demand my attention for some metrics.
I like a laugh as much as the next person – but not so much when it’s contrived.
Is it just me or are we potentially heading into better social media times?
